Collaging Linear Space Exploring Transparency Through Layering of Planes

Introduction

This project explored the concept of linearity and spatial collage. The urban design strategy was inspired by the linear gesture of large industrial and institutional buildings on site, which were built along the central northerly axis. Designed as an addition to Boris Lurie Art Storage, the new building continued the concept of linearity by adopting the existing open-web trusses structure and details.

Architecturally, the design was inspired by the collage created by artist Boris Lurie, who created thousands of collages during his lifetime. The theme of Lurie’s work was associated with war trauma and chaotic emotions, shown through colorful collages. As an art research and residence addition to the existing Boris Lurie warehouse, the design attempted to create a spatial collage through flexible partitions and architectural elements to honor the spirit of Lurie’s art.
